Kera
Well we’ve made it through the first work week and I’m happy to say that things went great! Our neighbors report that our house is quiet during the day, so it seems that Kera has adjusted to being home with Biscuit. So far this week we’ve been working on the command “sit” which she seems to have mastered when you have something that smells good in your hand =) and only if there are no distractions. We’re working on using this at the front door, but she hasn’t quite gotten the hang of it yet. We’ve also been working a lot on housebreaking - she’s not quite there yet, but she’s not having nearly as many accidents.
We’ve had a lot of fun introducing Kera at the dog park. She gets excited whenever we take out her “Adopt Me” bandana because that means that we’re going out. She loves to meet all the people at the park, but she stays pretty close to us, checking back every few seconds to make sure we’re in site. She pretty much ignores all of the dogs though. Much as they try to encourage her to play with them, she was not interested and would come and sit by our side. We’re hoping that she’ll warm up to the idea of playing with the other dogs, but it hasn’t happened yet.
Tonight we took Kera out on a walk. She really wanted to go for a car ride, but I insisted on the run. It was slow going, because she’s quite the puller so we had to stop a lot to practice the comand “Heel,” but by the end of the 3rd mile she was starting to get the hang of things.
WHAT A SWEETHEART!!! Kera stole our hearts from the moment she arrived! You’ve never seen such soft ears or such big puppydog eyes. She spent most of her first day with us running arround the yard and enjoying all the new smells while our puppy trailed behind. When it was time for bed, Kera really wanted to sleep in our bed. She jumped up several times and even tried to sneak in from the foot. She’d actually curled up there before we realized it, but alas, she resigned to sleep on her dog bed on the floor. We were so happy when SHE SLEPT THROUGH THE WHOLE NIGHT!!!
On day 2 she got up early and was ready to play. Even though she’s 4, she’s got more energy than the puppy! As soon as she got up she ran to get her squeaky toy duck and brought it back to Biscuit (our 1 year old puppy). Biscuit was still lazing around in bed (Just like me and my husband, Bobby). “Quack! Quack! Quack!” Biscuit looked up, but then got drowsy again and put her head back down - “Quack! Quack! Quack!” this time Biscuit gets up and chases her for a minute - both tails wagging frantically. They spent the next hour running circles around the house. She LOVES her toys! But she really wants to share them with you, and will drop them for you every time! She LOVES making them squeak and she LOVES playing fetch with her duck.
She also LOVES riding in the car and will hop right up, she comes when she’s called, and knows “Off” (of the bed and couch). She points at our rabbit (in a cage) and has chased some squirrels in the back yard, but she hasn’t been tested with a cat.
Our first couple of days with Kera have been a joy and we are really looking forward to her personality becoming even more pronounced. More to come . . .
